SML Charity Home Tour October 1st, 2nd & 3rd By Andie Gibson
It’s about being part of the community. It’s about helping people in need through the area’s local charities. It’s about getting to know your neighbors. And yes, it’s also about satisfying your curious side and getting a peek at some of the most incredible homes in the area. Now in its 14th year, the SML Charity Home Tour has become the most well-known and well-attended fundraiser at the Lake. Each year the tour breaks its own records in collecting funds that go to local charities. And, due to the large number of volunteers, even though the tour takes over 2000 people to run, the charities receive 92% of the total collected. Last year each charity received almost $25,000 from the tour. This year the tour is featuring eight lake homes. You can enjoy a scenic drive or a leisurely boat ride to each home on the first weekend in October. Here’s what you can expect: 1. Bull Home Natural materials both inside and out present elegant, yet rustic charm. Exterior stone covering front of house is repeated in lakeside stone towers. Custom cherry cabinets throughout the house also highlight professional kitchen with granite countertops and bay eating space. A poolroom, home theater and a “museum” housing extensive collections of the homeowners. 2. Disney Home Lovely French Country home with welcoming front porch and lots of arches and glass offers airy, outdoor feeling. Two-story family room emphasizes openness and allows for a big-water view. Gourmet kitchen features oversized granite island, and dining room and study have unique painted faux finishes. Six bedrooms plus a “train room” with double berths for guests add to spaciousness and charm. 3. Higginbotham Home Designed to highlight magnificent, unobstructed lake views, the stained brick and hardy board house features glass banisters both inside and out. Unique great room with three tiers of windows opens under a vaulted ceiling. Master bedroom enjoys indirect overhead lights and hand-painted ceiling. Viewed from indoor windows, yards are not visible and house appears to float on the lake. 4. Miller and King Home Nantucket-style warmed by antique leaded-glass windows, granite floors and countertops, and African Tiger wood flooring. ten foot ceilings with crown molding enhance openness and charm. Lower level houses a Nantucket room with a children’s boat bed. Media room, wine cellar, and separate guest quarters are over the garage. 5. Lea Home Stonehedge sets the theme of a European country manor, with stonewall, gate, and sign at entrance. High-ceilinged entrance features stone interior walls, and a view all the way through the house to the Lake. Ceiling beams and walls painted to resemble stone or brick add to rustic beauty and old-world charm. Arresting artwork, richly colored furnishings, and a stone fireplace coordinate the design motif. Six beautifully decorated bedrooms and seven baths lend spacious practicality. 6. Nevers Home Inviting French-style Country home flanked by plantings, meticulously landscaped cottage gardens, and tasteful pavers earns its name, “Belle Fleur.” Exquisite antiques placed tastefully throughout convey warmth as well as timelessness. A lovely, private sitting area complements each bedroom, while a large, modern kitchen combines function with beauty for the gourmet cook. 7. Shelor Home Both unique and practical for family living, comfort and beauty define this home. High ceilings throughout convey luxurious spaciousness. A fireplace in the kitchen/eating area provides a quaint, cozy touch. Master bedroom and bath are both roomy and pleasant. A wonderful sun porch offers relaxation and leisure while taking in the magnificent Lake scene. Imaginative dock leads to special beach area for little ones. 8. Smith Home Old charm meets new design in this traditional center hall colonial, enhanced by the owners’ creative imagination. Vaulted-ceiling entertainment suite, complete with pool table and pinball machine, opens to second floor porch with hot tub. Billiards room on upper level offers another place to play. Cherry cabinets and inlaid wood flooring enhance the kitchen and dining room respectively. Treasures from around the globe color the décor throughout.
