SML business leaders tee it up for the Chamber By Andie Gibson
More than a decade ago, local business leaders organized the first Smith Mountain Lake Corporate Cup golf tournament, which for years was the largest non-dues fund raiser for the SML Chamber of Commerce. Though it’s been surpassed by the popular Wine Festival in terms of revenue, the Corporate Cup is still a major event on the Chamber calendar. “This event is so much fun and such a great tradition for our community,” said Vicki Gardner, Executive Director of the Chamber. “Each year, business people take a day out of the office to enjoy the beautiful weather, the great golf course and really capitalize on the opportunity to network with other leaders in a relaxed atmosphere.” The 10th Annual Smith Mountain Lake Chamber Corporate Cup will take place Monday, May 8 at The Waterfront Country Club. The event alternates each year between The Waterfront and The Water’s Edge, the Lake’s two private country clubs. “It’s not only a networking opportunity, but a great way for many in our area who would otherwise not get the chance to play these two great clubs,” said Dwayne Robinson, chairman of this year’s event. “The Waterfront will be in fantastic shape and we’re looking forward to a day of fun and fellowship on the golf course.” The 18-hole event, which is open to Chamber members of all playing abilities, includes greens fee, cart, a buffet lunch prior to play and privileges on the range. Foursomes compete in a modified Captain’s Choice format with tee off at 12:30 p.m. In addition to gross and net team honors, each player has the opportunity to compete for closest-to-pin, longest drive, hole-in-one and various other prizes. Following play, participants are invited to stay and enjoy a cocktail reception and an extensive buffet dinner prepared by Executive Chef Scott Bowles and his staff. The tournament field is limited to 120 players and sponsorships are available to further showcase your business. Working for more than 670 area businesses, the Chamber serves three counties and the immediate Lake vicinity. Its mission is to encourage tourism and growth while doing everything from running the official state-recognized Visitor Center to supporting capital improvements to our area.
