The Celtic Festival Returns to the Traditional Style

By Becca Garland

Grab a Haggis Puff and celebrate the rich heritage of the Irish, Scottish, Welsh and other Celtic cultures. On April 24, 2004, go back in time and enjoy the food, culture, and entertainment of the Celtic People. The Sedalia Center’s annual Celtic Festival and Irish Music Concert is going traditional.

Playing, dancing and singing into the past are several of the nation’s most authentic Celtic performers.  Headlining the event is Coyote Run. In the tradition of the Ancient Bards, Coyote Run weaves songs that soar through the air, embrace mother earth, challenge the vastness of the waters, and evoke the spirit of sacred fire. Their driving rhythms tell tales of battle, love, loss, and the joy of living. Taking from Celtic, warrior, and maritime traditions, they play a range of instruments and all sing.

IONA - known as one of the best “Pan-Celtic” groups in America is returning this year. Their repertoire includes Irish, Scottish, Breton, Welsh, Manx, Cornish, and Galician styles of music. These seasoned entertainers actually sing in the classic languages, lead simple Breton dances, teach the words and meanings of their songs and entertain with every emotion in the spectrum.

Local group, Riddle On The Harp will also be returning with their variety of wind and string instruments, including the violin, guitar, bowed psaltery, flute, recorder, harp, mandolin and hammered dulcimer. And local newcomers, Generic Folk will be performing with a special guest singer.

You don’t have to have a Celtic heritage to enjoy the day of performances, sheep herding, re-enactments and history. There will be a variety of stands offering everything from Scottish Meat Pies to beer. There will be a seminar on choosing Whiskey from the Society of Whiskey Tasters. At the Celtic Market, artisans offer jewelry and clothing using the traditional Celtic symbols and designs. Some even offer the meaning and history of the individual pieces. You can also find one of the best collections of armor, swords and woodworking. This is definitely a family event and kids will love the animals and skits. They will also have their own area where they can participate in a mural painting and maybe even make potato art.
