Great Outdoor Events By Andie Gibson The 16th Annual Smith Mountain Lake Antique & Classic Boat Show took place Aug. 12-13 at The Pointe at Mariners Landing. Hundreds came out to enjoy the cool weather, good food and more than 60 classic boats from across the country. Fun-Filled Fall Festival If you’ve never been to the Smith Mountain Lake Fall Festival, you’re missing out on one of Smith Mountain Lake’s oldest and most popular traditions. This fun-filled annual event, which is sponsored by the White House Association, will take place Saturday, Oct. 14 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Point at Parkway Marina. This year’s festival will feature a flea market, arts and crafts sale, a demonstration by a Smith Mountain Lake marine fireboat, and an auto show with antique cars, trucks, tractors and hot rods, plus a contest for the ugliest vehicle. There will also be clowns, a dunking booth, and family games, including balloon darts, ring toss and frog launcher. Back by popular demand will be the Sponge Bob and Moon Walk “blowups” for children to jump in and Carousel rides. There will also be an appearance by Smoky the Bear and a concert by the Smith Mountain Lake Harmeneers barbershop chorus. The always-popular “womanless” beauty contest will again be featured along with a “manless” contest, which has been added to this year’s festivities. Of course, there will also be lots of good food and drinks and homemade baked goods. There will be chances to win door prizes, a 50-50 drawing and live musical entertainment. The festival is a fun-filled event suitable for the entire family (except pets). Proceeds benefit the Saunders Volunteer Fire Company, Smith Mountain Lake Ruritans, the Mentow Baptist Church Youth Group, Huddleston Rescue Squad and the White House Association.
