SML Newcomers Club, Inc.
President’s Report
By Sandy Houck, Resident Moneta, 24121

The Smith Mountain Lake Newcomers Club is a social group formed officially in January 1996 to promote and encourage friendship and social activities among new residents in the vicinity of Smith Mountain Lake.  The club is non-profit with annual dues of $15.  Those joining after July 1st pay first-year dues of $10.  Club members receive a monthly newsletter with information about upcoming programs and events, and meeting notices that provide in-depth information about special interest groups.  These groups were created upon request of members as a means of sharing common interests and to have fun.
We currently have 20 various groups ranging from sports groups such as tennis, bowling and hiking, to social activities provided by the Lunch Bunch and Breakfast Club groups.  We have a very active Antique-ing group, a Book Club and Singles Club, The Knit and Stitch and Line Dancing groups are also popular.  Our Wanderers group attracts many members, as well as spouses, who travel to various places for the day by charter bus or by car-pooling.  We recently had our first overnight trip to the Asheville, NC, area to visit The Biltmore House and Gardens.  Special events such as dinner/dances, chili bingo night, 50’s party, and Octoberfest in a local restaurant have been popular social outings, which include spouses, though our single members are encouraged to attend.
General meetings are held on the second Monday of every month beginning at 10:30 a.m., usually at Trinity Ecumenical Parish, with changes of venue published in the Newcomer’s Newsletter.  The monthly business meeting is most often combined with an informative program, pot luck lunch, or other activity which serves to keep the general membership advised of organization changes, while providing the opportunity to meet new members. Guests are welcome and are invited to attend two meetings or functions before making a decision to join Newcomers.  For more information, please contact any club officer or the Greeters, Carol Brewer - 297-6771, Dorothy Finger - 721-7087, or Carol Reidenbach  - 576-2322.
