In Perfect Harmony By Kate Hofstetter Husbands, wives, suitors, take note: If you’re looking for a unique way to impress that special person in your life, consider a singing Valentine. As many as five quartets from the Smith Mountain Lake Harmeneers Barbershop Chorus will be out and about the week before and the week of Valentine’s Day (Feb. 14), dressed in their finest to serenade sweethearts in four-part harmony. “We will deliver our singing Valentines anywhere,” said Al Nelson, publicity chairman for the group. “We’ve gone to schools, homes, restaurants, country clubs, hospitals, convalescent homes, churches, offices. You name it – we’ll go.” For just $45 the object of your affection will be treated to two songs, a rose, a Valentine and a photo to commemorate the occasion. The songs will be appropriate for the setting and the season and include such favorites as “Let Me Call You Sweetheart,” “Sweet and Lovely,” “My Wild Irish Rose,” and “You’re The Flower Of My Heart.” “We try to make it a special experience,” Al said. “The guys who make up the quartets love doing it and they have a great time.” Most years, he said, they receive 60-100 calls for singing Valentines. The tradition is one of the organization’s major fund raisers and is practiced nationwide. Proceeds benefit music programs and scholarships in Franklin County, Bedford County and Lynchburg. The SML Harmeneers are a chapter of the Barber Shop Harmony Society, a worldwide organization. The chapter was formed eight years ago and is made up of a chorus of 40 men.
Although the Harmeneers will take calls up to the last minute, to guarantee your sweetheart gets a singing Valentine, call a week in advance. Call Al Nelson, 721.9600; Blanton Bryant, 586.3954; or Phil Brown, 434.239.9519. Quartets can also be booked for other special occasions such as anniversaries.
