The Villas at Emerald Bay

Story by Jerry Hale • Photography by James Roney

As Smith Mountain Lake gains favor as a retirement destination, it attracts late-in-life couples seeking housing designed with well-to-do empty-nesters in mind. Bayview Construction is providing exactly that in an upscale, gated community called Emerald Bay.

“People reach a stage of life when they want to enjoy luxurious ‘lakestyle living’ without all the maintenance effort, hassles and expense demanded by a waterfront home,” said Tom Lovegrove, who’s developing the waterfront project off Scruggs Road in Franklin County. “Some are retired, some are still working; but they share a penchant for comfortable living and free time to enjoy travel, family, hobbies and entertaining.”

Emerald Bay’s single-family villas have been carefully planned for luxury, comfort and convenience. On the main level is primary living space — inviting foyer, living room, dining room, dramatic great room with lofted ceiling, kitchen, office/library, powder room, and glamorous master suite. There’s a spacious guest “master” upstairs, accessed along a dramatic overlook walkway. Owners can expand their villa to a full 5,465 square feet by finishing the Lake level into a game room with fireplace and bar, home theater and wine cellar/tasting room. And each home will include a covered boat lift with overhead storage in one of three attractive Emerald Bay boathouses.

“Stunning” is the standard for the finishing in these residences, with granite kitchen countertops, multi-tiered tray ceilings, and extra-wide decorative molding. Options include a  remote-controlled reflective fireplace, beautifully-crafted office cabinetry and Kohler’s unique “SOK” tub.

A “Smart House” option offers the ultimate in home security and control. It enables pre-programming of lighting and temperature to reflect home use patterns, and it allows monitoring of living spaces (and boat slip!), adjustment of lights, heating and cooling, and admission of visitors from any internet terminal.

Standard features such as 35-year-warranted metal roofing, low-maintenance concrete-composite siding, composite Weatherbest low-maintenance decking and never-paint railings make Emerald Bay villas nearly maintenance free. Landscape and boat dock maintenance are included in the Property Owners Association dues. Other services – including car and boat detailing, major housecleaning, shopping and in-home nursing – are planned through an active POA.
