The Basics of Safe Boating
By Debbie Robbins

Nearly 80 million people in North America enjoy boating each year. Follow proper safety procedures, add a dash of common courtesy and you'll have a fun and relaxing day on the water.

Have the proper equipment
Equipment such as tool kit, fire extinguisher, horn, first aid kit, paddles, food and water and foul weather gear can mean the difference between life and death.

Wear your life jacket
Eight out of 10 fatalities in boating accidents result from drowning. Nine out of 10 victims weren't wearing life jackets.

Know water ways
Just like driving a car, piloting a boat is a responsibility. Always operate at a safe speed and be alert for other boats. Understand and follow navigational markers and buoys. Use a depth device to determine water depth and provide warning of underwater hazards. Leave alcohol at home.

Consider taking a course conducted by the Coast Guard Auxiliary, U.S. Power Squadrons and/or National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) to get more information about boats, boat handling, local laws, and navigation. For more information visit the USCG recreation boating safety web site at www.uscgboating.org or call 1-800-368-5647.
