David Harris 1979 Porsche 911SC Coupe PDF Print E-mail
01 February 2005
By Fred Tscheulin

Isn’t it amazing what people have in their garage? Mine is pretty typical, but recently I’ve discovered that for some lucky guys the conventional garage – you know two cars, mowers, rakes, shovels, ladder, trash can, broom etc. – is not a garage, but a kind of sanctuary; a place of refuge.
While attending a dinner party recently, the after dinner conversation, among the “guys” drifted from the usual topics of sports, fishing, golf and boats to a reminiscence of the cars we owned in our youth and wished we still owned today .My turquoise 1958 MGA, for example. Or the 1949 canary yellow Buick Century convertible.
We all took our nostalgic trip down memory lane when our host, David Harris, invited us to follow him to his garage. We walked, single file, as if following a torch bearer through the Catacombs. Upon our arrival, David opened the door and flicked on the light switch.
POW!
There, gleaming under the lights, sitting on a polished floor, surrounded by posters and shining chrome-finished tools sat a pristine, silver 1979 Porsche 911SC Coupe – the first “brand new” car he ever purchased more than 26 years ago. And, of course, as you might expect, David had the requisite three-inch binder that contains all the car’s documentation, including the original window sticker, service records, manuals and even the original “sold” tag that was placed on the windshield at the showroom floor. “Quite a litany,” he said smiling, for a 70,000 mile (so far) journey that started at Park-Hegarty Porsche in Lawrence, Mass., and included three padded van trips to Scottsdale, Ariz.; Chicago and now Smith Mountain Lake.
“Yeah,” David explained, “I thought this was a unique ‘toy story’ until I met my new SML neighbor, Ken Ward. He’s the original purchaser of a 1971 vintage Jaguar XKE convertible with only 30,000 miles. It’s sitting in his garage! Also, Porsche lovers will want to look into “Blau Rain” Blue Ridge Region Porsche Club of America. This year’s big event is the 2005 Porsche Parade in June to celebrate their 50th anniversary.”
Since that night I’ve mentioned this experience to several friends only to hear about other fascinating garage “sanctuaries” around Smith Mountain Lake where guys work, play, hang-out and relax, doing the things most other guys only dream about. Your editors at Smith Mountain Laker.com want to discover these hidden treasurers and share them with our readers in future issues.
