Chiropractic Care Smith Mountain Lake

With more time being spent in front of computers, good ergonomics is imperative.

By Micah Gaudio

The best way to fight the pain, emotional stress and missed work that may accompany a spinal problem is to prevent it from happening in the first place. The following tips will help you identify and eliminate “spinal stressors” that can occur during computer or desk work in home or office situations and improve your spinal health on a daily basis.

1. Make sure your chair fits correctly. Choose an adjustable chair with a firm lumbar support for the lower back. There should be two inches between the front edge of the seat and the back of your legs. Sit with your feet flat on the floor, your knees at a 90 degree angle and with your back on the backrest. The best seated position is 100 – 110 degrees. You should also sit so your feet, hips, shoulders, and head all face the same direction.

2. The computer monitor should be at eye level, a height that doesn’t cause you to tilt your head up or bend your neck down. The keyboard should be placed directly below the computer screen and the angle should allow you to type with your wrists in a neutral position.

3. Take periodic stretch breaks (every 45 minutes minimum is best.) Go to the restroom or stand in place and stretch in all different positions. Getting up and moving is important to your neck and back muscles, provides you with more energy and relaxes your eyes.

4. Use a speaker phone or headset to avoid cradling the phone between your ear and shoulder. This can lock up the spinal joints in the neck and upper back, and eventually cause pain.

If you experience headaches, pain or stiffness from prolonged use of computers or office work, chiropractic care can help. It is effective, safe and scientifically proven to relieve pain. Please call Chiropractic Care Center if you have any questions about what we can do for you.
