SMAC Holds 15th Annual Art Show

By Charlie Walker

The warm blush of sunlight on the clouds reflects gently on the glimmering rolling surface of the water. The cool of night recedes to greet the cozy dawn as the sun exhales its rays of light onto the Lake. The simple beauty of a sunrise has moved many artists to try recreating the scene or sensation. Using paints and canvas or molding elements to create a work that will capture the endless and timeless beauty of the moment.

Conducted annually for the past 15 years, the SMAC Art Show has become a tradition for many lake artists. Anything from traditional watercolors to modernized abstract sculptures of wood or metal can be entered as long as the work is original and deemed appropriate by the hanging committee. All regional artists are invited to enter, however there is no geographical restriction on participation. The show is one of the biggest events for the Council and planning begins as early as February to coordinate all the details from the advertising down to the volunteers who work the show. This year, the show will be held September 23rd through October 3rd at Resurrection Catholic Church in Moneta.

One of the benefits of this show is that it is non-juried, ensuring that as long as space is available, anyone can enter and have a chance to win. When asked if he had ever entered the show, Chairperson, Douglas Conary responded in the affirmative by saying, “I’m just an amateur and I did it for fun.” Like many others, once he got involved he decided to work even more with SMAC. While the contest is for those 18 or older, a student category for 14- to 17-year-olds is offered. Each artist is limited to three entries, except for the student category where participants may submit one entry into the category. Entry fees are as follows: For SMAC members it is $10 for the first entry and $6 for each additional entry, non-members who wish to join SMAC include a $15 membership fee in addition to entry fees, and for non-members who do not wish to join it is $15 for the first entry and $8.00 for each additional entry. The student fee is $5. Several categories with monetary prizes totaling more than $1,700 are available, including a Floral category sponsored by the Garden Club. Six merit awards are given in addition to 1st, 2nd, 3rd place, and the coveted “Best in Show.”

A juror is brought in every year to judge and award the prizes. This year, Ellen Glasgow, a nationally recognized landscape painter will judge the competition. Ellen has lived in many parts of the world and annually returns to Europe to study and paint. The recipient of many awards, her work has been in museum exhibitions and included in collections across the U.S. Currently, Ellen directs the Capital Gallery of Contemporary Art in Frankfort, KY. She will award the prizes at the opening reception on Friday, Sept. 24th. The reception will last from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

While the opening reception is for the participants, supporters, SMAC members and invited guests, the art show is open to the public Sept. 23rd through Oct. 3rd at Resurrection Catholic Church, Monday - Sat. from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday noon to 4 p.m.

Due to the openness of the show, no work may be removed before the end of the show and all work must be delivered to Resurrection Catholic Church by Wednesday, Sept. 22 between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. Each piece must be ready to hang with wire attached to the back, a 3x5 card with the Title, Artist name, Medium and Price affixed to the front, and dimensions are not to exceed 50x50 inches including the frame.

All entry forms with check accompaniment must be received by Sept. 13th. For more information
